Toppling Teacups

These two windows were designed to create a quirky and striking entrance to the Friends Coffee Shop in the Royal United Hospital, Bath. Like a retro shop sign, this image clearly indicates what is on offer behind the doors, even without reading the words.

The cups were formed with fused glass, allowing the stripes and polka dot patterning to be free of black lines. The wording was screen printed using traditional glass paint, which was then fused in the kiln to form a permanent part of the glass.

These pieces were then leaded together to form the finished window. It was important that clear glass was used predominantly in order to allow safe passage into the coffee shop.
